Spiritual Jazz is a concert that I began
formulating after having been a part of the choir
which presented Duke Ellington's sacred pieces
during the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival in
Wilmington several years ago. I first presented
Spiritual Jazz during the 2008 Berks Jazz Fest
in Reading, PA at the glorious First Baptist Church
in downtown Reading. This concert was part of
the afternoon vesper service and provided a
joyful and uplifting message for those in
attendance. The program includes traditional
hymns arranged in a light jazz style, gospel pieces,
and several of Duke Ellington's inspiring sacred
pieces, written for his Sacred concerts in the
1960s.
